WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
Kaelyn Oskin scored a pair of goals and the West Liberty University women's soccer team took over sole possession of second place in the Mountain East Conference North Division here Wednesday with a 2-0 shutout of Wheeling at the West Family Athletic Complex.
Oskin, a graduate senior from Butler, Pa., got Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (4-2-1, 3-2-1) off to a flying start when she outraced a Cardinal defender to a well-paced through ball from
Alyssa Rhinaman and scored past Wheeling (3-4-0, 2-3-0) keeper Mikayla Yarwood barely 30 seconds into the match.
After West Liberty carried that 1-0 lead into intermission, Oskin provided a little more breathing room shortly after play resumed in the second half.
Taking a centering pass from Bella Aperfine just above the top of the box, Oskin spun past her marking back and darted into the box between a pair of defenders, ripping another shot past Yarwood from 10 yards out for a 2-0 Hilltopper lead.
Oskin's two goals on Wednesday made her the leading scorer in program history with 16 career goals to go along with 5 assists. They were her third and fourth goals of the current season.
West Liberty goalkeeper
Olivia Montgomery notched her third clean sheet of the season, making three saves on the night to keep the Cardinals off the board. Yarwood had 5 saves in a losing cause for the visitors.
The Hilltoppers host defending North Division champion Notre Dame (Ohio) on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the West Family Athletic Complex.
