Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season here Friday night, handing Glenville State a 1-0 shutout loss under the lights at the West Family Athletic Complex.
Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (1-1) and the Pioneers (1-1) added the game to their schedules this week to replace previously-scheduled games with Salem that had been canceled due to a lack of players on the Salem roster.
The game will not count in the Mountain East Conference standings as the teams are already scheduled to meet in an MEC match on Oct. 27 in Glenville.
Friday's lone goal came off a West Liberty set piece in the 25th minute. Second-year freshman
Anne Williams took a free kick following a Glenville State foul a few yards above the top of the penalty area and ripped a curling left-footed laser into the top left corner of the cage.
Williams nearly added an insurance tally, slamming a drive off the crossbar in the 90th minute, as West Liberty outshot Glenville by an 8-3 margin on the night. Hilltopper goalkeeper
Olivia Montgomery came through with two saves to keep the Pioneers off the board and seal the win.
The Black and Gold open MEC play on Wednesday when they head to South Euclid, Ohio for a 4 p.m. match against Notre Dame.
