WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
Kaden Blomquist hit a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh here Monday to give the West Liberty University baseball team a wild walk-off win in the second game of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at sun-splashed Kovalick Field.
Blomquist's bomb gave Coach
Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (16-15, 15-10) a 7-6 win after the Bobcats (8-20, 6-14) had pulled out a 3-1 decision in Monday's first game.
The second game was tied 2-2 in the bottom of the third when WLU's
Ross Salvatori untied it in dramatic fashion with a three-run home run over the left field fence to put the hosts on top, 5-2.
The Hilltoppers carried a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning only to see the Bobcats' Andrew Smith follow a pair of one-out singles with a fence-clearing drive to right-center to give Frostburg State a 6-5 lead.
West Liberty followed pretty much the same blueprint for success in the bottom of the frame. With one out,
Brian Campbell – the reigning MEC Player of the Week – beat out an infield hit to third and Blomquist with the game-winner over the right field wall.
Blomquist had a single to go along with his clutch home run while
Ty Helmke also had a multi-hit game with a double, single and RBI.
Jake Probst added an RBI double and
Colton Coss also knocked out a two-bagger.
In the opener, Bryce Jackson belted a two-run home run to snap a 1-1 tie with two out in the top of the seventh and the visitors held on for the win against a frustrated Hilltopper squad that produced multiple scoring chances but wound up stranding 11 runners on base.
West Liberty managed just five singles with its lone run coming on a
Zach Hawkins RBI single in the bottom of the fourth. Coss had two of West Liberty's five hits.
The Hilltoppers return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairmont State.
