WHEELING, W.Va. – Kenadee Burgoyne scored two goals in the final five minutes here Saturday to snap a scoreless tie and give host Wheeling a 2-0 victory against West Liberty in the final women's soccer match of the regular season for both teams.
There was plenty of end-to-end action in the match as the teams combined for 36 shots over the course of the afternoon but neither squad could cash in on its opportunities until Burgoyne struck in the 86th minute.
Coming on a loose ball just outside the box, she rifled a shot that curled just inside the top right corner of the cage, giving the Cardinals (5-11-2, 4-10-2) a 1-0 lead.
With time slipping away, the Hilltoppers (6-9-3, 5-8-3) stepped up the pace but were unable to equalize. Burgoyne put the match away with an unassisted goal in the 89th minute, salvaging a split in the season series for Wheeling. West Liberty had handed the Cardinals a 2-0 loss in their first meeting.
Wheeling outshot the Black and Gold by a significant, 25-11, margin but had just a 9-7 edge in shots on goal.
Kaitlyn Taylor was charted with seven saves for West Liberty while Mikayla Yarwood also had seven saves to earn the shutout for the hosts.
