MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team got its Mountain East Conference schedule off to a flying start here Friday night with a 7-0 shutout of MEC newcomer Frostburg State at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (2-0, 1-0) were in control from the start. They didn't lose a game in sweeping the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point before reeling off six straight-set victories in singles to finish off the Bobcats (2-4, 0-1).
Gemma Cliffe posted back-to-back 6-0 wins in her No. 2 singles match while Nathalia Valencia and
Luisa Agudelo dropped just one game each at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Raissa Wagner, No. 3 singles, and
Anita Ponti, No. 5 singles, coasted to 6-1 6-1 triumphs in singles play with
Carleyah McLean prevailing by scores of 6-2 and 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Wagner and Cliffe combined for the 6-0 shutout at No. 1 doubles with Valencia and Ponti forming the No. 2 doubles tandem. McLean and Agudelo wasted little time taking care of business at No. 3 doubles.
The Lady Hilltoppers will have a bit of a break before stepping out of MEC play on Feb. 28 to host California (Pa.) in an indoor match at "The Bubble."
