(With this year's intercollegiate athletic seasons put on hold due to health concerns, we're taking a look back at previous Hilltopper happenings on this date. Two years ago today, Coach Justin Simpson's indoor track squads got their seasons off to a record-setting start in Marietta!)
Marietta First Glimpse Meet Results
MARIETTA, Ohio – The West Liberty University track team got its indoor season off to a record-setting start at Saturday's Marietta First Glimpse meet hosted by Marietta College in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.
Returning All-MEC standout
Dominique Hudson obliterated a pair of school records on the men's side while fellow senior
Ashley Reynolds carved her name into the Hilltoppers' women's record book.
"We took a small group up there for an early-season ice breaker and came home with three new school records in the throwing events," head coach
Justin Simpson said. "Our throws have always been an area of strength for us and it looks like this year will be no different."
Hudson ran away from the field in the men's shot put competition with a school-record heave of 15.78 meters – nearly 4 feet farther than the second-place finisher.
With that winning throw, Hudson became the first Hilltopper to break the 50-foot barrier indoors at 51 feet, 9.25 inches. The previous WLU indoor record of 49 feet, 0 inches was set by John Baker and had been on the books since 1999.
Hudson also set a school record in the men's 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 17.27 meters (56 feet, 8 inches) – less than 2 inches shy of the winning toss of 17.31 meters by Frostburg State's John Kerns. Hudson's throw of 17.27 meters shattered the previous school record of 16.05 meters (52 feet, 8 inches) set by
Aaron Schneid on Jan. 25, 2014.
The Hilltopper throwers dominated the weight throw with three of the top six placers.
Hogan Wells finished fourth at 14.89 meters while Aaron Crider - who had placed ninth in the shot put - backed that up with a sixth-place finish in the weight throw at 12.97 meters.
Reynolds also erased a mark that had been on the books for quite some time as she earned runner-up honors in the women's shot put with a school-record effort of 12.05 meters (39 feet, 6.5 inches).
The previous record of 11.66 meters (38 feet, 3 inches) had been set by Patrice King during the 2000 indoor season.
