October 18, 2013 (Women's Tennis)
(With this year's fall semester sports sidelined by health concerns, let's take a look back at what was happening in Hilltopper sports on this date in history. Seven years ago today, the WLU women's tennis team had four All-MEC selections. The regionally-ranked Lady Hilltoppers advanced to the MEC Tournament championship match and went on to earn their fourth straight NCAA Tournament bid!)
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Four members of the West Liberty University women's tennis team earned All-Mountain East Conference on Friday when the MEC coaches announced the results of their All-Conference balloting.
Raissa Wischi and
Lauren Howard were first-team selections while Raquel Cabero and
Emily Dawson collected second-team honors on the All-MEC honor roll, which was announced on the opening day of the league's inaugural championship tournament.
Howard, a junior from Lee-on-Solent, England, was a repeat first-team honoree after being named West Virginia Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore. She led Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers to a runner-up finish in the regular-season standings with another strong performance at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.
Wischi, a senior from Sao Paolo, Brazil, is now a four-time All-Conference selection, having been an All-WVIAC pick in each of her first three seasons. Wischi lost only one match all year at No. 2 singles and teamed with Howard to give West Liberty a formidable duo at No. 1 doubles.
Cabero, a freshman from Madrid, Spain, and Dawson, a sophomore from East Liverpool, Ohio who played her high school tennis at Beaver Local, also put together strong conference campaigns.
Cabero lost only one MEC match at No. 3 singles and teamed with
Alex Barr at No. 2 doubles. Dawson also had only one MEC loss at No. 4 singles and was paired with Andrea Puga at No. 3 doubles.
The No. 2 seed in this weekend's MEC Tournament field, the West Liberty women were scheduled to take on No. 7 seed Concord in a quarterfinal match on Friday at the Schoenbaum Tennis Complex. Semifinal matches are set for Saturday with the inaugural MEC champion to be crowned on Sunday.
