URBANA, Ohio – The West Liberty University women's soccer team won the statistical battle but lost the war here Saturday as Urbana eked out a 2-0 victory in Mountain East Conference action at Urbana University Stadium.
Coach
Barry Christmas's hard-luck Hilltoppers (0-4-1, 0-1-1) launched a 22-shot barrage at the Blue Knights' (1-3-0, 1-1-0) goal but couldn't get anything behind Urbana netminder Hazel Sans. The California juco transfer weathered the WLU storm to post her first career shutout and finish with a career-high 12 saves, tied for the most in the MEC this season.
Despite West Liberty's offensive onslaught, it was the Blue Knights who broke the scoring ice in the 33rd minute. A Hilltopper defender blocked a shot by Urbana's Saylor Jewell only to see the ball deflect to Cassidy James, who nudged the carom into the net for a 1-0 Blue Knight lead.
West Liberty continued to press the issue in the second half but Sanz proved equal to every challenge. A WLU turnover near midfield led to the game's final goal with Urbana's Kristen Dickison applying the coup de grace in the 82nd minute.
The Hilltoppers finished with a 22-13 edge in total shots and a 12-9 advantage in shots on goal. West Liberty also had a 9-6 margin in corner kick opportunities but was unable to capitalize. Goalkeeper
Olivia Montgomery was credited with 7 saves.
The WLU women hit the MEC road once again on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match at Fairmont State.
