Short-Handed Hilltoppers Fall at Urbana

URBANA, Ohio – The West Liberty University men's soccer team jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hang on as a high-powered Urbana squad pulled away to a 7-1 victory here Saturday night in Mountain East Conference action at Urbana University Stadium.
Coach Sean Regan's youthful Hilltoppers (0-5-0, 0-5-0) took a 1-0 lead in the opening minute when Blue Knight keeper Jakob Henriksen mishandled a long free kick in the box and an alert Josh Yeaman collected the loose ball and tapped it into the back of the net.
Urbana (2-2-1, 2-1-0) wasted little time coming up with the equalizer as Luke Nicholls finished off an assist from Harry Lovell to forge a 1-1 tie in the fifth minute.
Jasminko Dizdarevic made it 2-1 Blue Knights with a penalty kick in the 11th minute and followed that up with a clinical finish off a Nicholls cross in the 20th minute for a 3-1 lead.
Any hopes of a Hilltopper comeback were dashed seconds later when the WLU goalkeeper was red carded for a dangerous foul on an ill-timed clearing attempt. Dizdarevic converted the penalty kick for his third goal in a 10-minute span and WLU was forced to play a man down the rest of the way.
Dizdarevic finished the night with four goals and an assist while Jake Wischmeier added a pair of goals and Lovell was charted with a goal and an assist.
Urbana's man advantage tilted the field considerably as the hosts outshot West Liberty by a 25-3 margin, keeping play on the WLU end of the field for long stretches of the match. Hilltopper netminders Noah Underwood and Jorn Hocter kept things from getting completely out of hand by combining for 10 saves.
The Hilltoppers will look for better results on Tuesday when they step out of conference play for a 7:30 p.m. match against Barton (N.C.) at Haymarket, Va.
