ELKINS, W.Va. – The regionally-ranked West Liberty University men's tennis team came from behind in singles play to pick up its sixth straight win here Tuesday afternoon, rallying past upset-minded Davis & Elkins, 4-3, in non-conference action at the Thomas Tennis Center.
Coach
Sam McCullough's youthful Hilltoppers (9-6), ranked No. 9 in the latest ITA Atlantic Region rankings, dug themselves into an early hole when the host Senators (2-15) picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take the doubles point and carry a 1-0 lead into singles action.
Momentum swung back and forth throughout singles play before D&E pulled out a three-set win at No. 1 singles to take a 3-2 lead with only the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches remaining.
Akira Kawabata and
Nash Morris came up big for the Black and Gold. Kawabata rolled to a 6-3 6-3 win at No. 5 singles and Morris clinched it with a 6-2 6-3 nod in the No. 6 slot.
The West Liberty men will put their six-match winning streak on the line Sunday when they host Bluefield (Va.) in a non-conference match at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex. Doubles action starts at 2 p.m.
