GLENVILLE, W.Va. –
Kat Donzella added to her Mountain East Conference home run lead and the West Liberty University softball team split a doubleheader at Glenville State Monday afternoon.
Coach
Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (24-5, 16-6) pounded out a 10-1 win against the Pioneers (12-28, 5-17) in the second game after seeing the hosts rally for a 6-5 win in the opener.
Donzella got WLU off to a fast start in the finale with a three-run homer in the top of the first. It was her league-leading 13th home run of the season and her third in the last five games.
The Hilltoppers were far from finished, tacking on two more runs in the second inning for a 5-1 lead before breaking the game open with a three-run homer from
Sydney Bennington and a two-run double off the bat of
Audrey Meloun in the fourth frame.
Allie Cook scored three runs and drove in another with a single and a double while MEC Player of the Week
Katie Beeman continued to rake with a double and a triple.
Riley Bennington went the distance in the circle for the win, striking out 10 batters and giving up only three hits in the 5-inning "mercy rule" victory.
In the opener, the Hilltoppers carried a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth only to see a walk and back-to-back home runs put the Pioneers on top to stay.
Laral Saunders singled twice and scored a pair of runs for WLU while Donzella singled and drove in a pair of runs. Beeman had a single and an RBI as did
Anna Paterson while
Sydney Bennington doubled home a run.
The West Liberty women hit the road on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader at Pitt-Johnstown.
