Another Sweep for West Liberty Baseball

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team finished off a four-game sweep of Urbana on Monday with two more wins at cold and blustery Kovalick Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (8-25, 7-13) got things started with a 7-6 win in an 11-inning marathon before pounding the Blue Knights (7-26, 3-17) into submission by a 12-5 count in the finale.
In the opener, Jarrett Delbrugge's 2-out RBI single ended it in the bottom of the 11th after Tyler Ramsay's seventh-inning solo homer had tied the score and forced extra innings.
Ramsay also jump-started the winning rally by leading off the 11th with a double to left. Jason Schutte sacrificed him to third and two intentional walks sandwiched around an infield popup set the stage for Delbrugge's game-winning single through the right side of the infield.
Bailey McGrath reached base all five times, going 4-for-4 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Ramsay came up a triple shy of the cycle with a single, double and home run, scoring three runs and driving in three more.
Schutte added a triple, double and RBI while Coby Eckstein had a double and a single. Colton Coss doubled and drove in a run while Isaac Rine picked up a single and an RBI.
Luke Nees and Cody Shook blanked the Blue Knights on just one hit over the final five frames. Shook retired the side in order in the 10th and 11th to earn the win.
In the finale, West Liberty spotted the visitors an early 1-0 lead but went ahead to stay with two runs in the bottom of the second before putting the game on ice with a season-high eight-run uprising in the bottom of the third.
Coss had three singles and scored a run while driving in another. Eckstein scored three runs while driving in two more with a double and a home run. Schutte reached ball all four times and scored three runs while driving in two with a pair of singles. He also collected three stolen bases.
McGrath continued his hot hitting, smacking out a double and a single to drive in two runs while Chad Matthus picked up three RBIs with a pair of base knocks. Dalton Davis and Jared Houser added RBI singles.
Mitch Viakley went the distance on the mound for the complete-game win.
Tuesday's scheduled non-conference doubleheader against Indiana (Pa.) has been postponed to a later date. The Hilltoppers return to the diamond on Friday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at MEC North Division leader Shepherd.
