WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team couldn't write a happy ending to its Senior Day story here Sunday as West Virginia Wesleyan escaped with a 1-0 victory on a bright but chilly afternoon at the West Family Athletic Complex.
This was the final home match for five WLU seniors –
Caitlin deVries,
Layne Hartnell,
Kaylee Hilliard,
Nikki Lolua and
Kelly Millner – who were honored along with their families in ceremonies leading up to the opening kickoff.
Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (3-9-4, 3-6-4) battled the surging Bobcats (10-5-0, 8-4-0) to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes and continued to hold their own in the defensive end when the team returned to the field for the second half.
Wesleyan stepped up the offensive pressure midway through the period and finally broke through in the 66th minute when Kayla Fay slipped a short ball past hard-working WLU keeper
Olivia Montgomery for what proved to be the only score of the match.
The Bobcats finished with just a slight 11-7 advantage in shots but put eight of them on frame while the Hilltoppers were credited with just four shots on goal. Montgomery came up big with seven saves in the match but Wesleyan keeper Chelsea Hubner turned aside all four West Liberty shots to preserve the shutout and give the visitors their fourth consecutive win.
The Lady Hilltoppers head to Davis & Elkins on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. match against the Senators.
