WHEELING, W.Va. – Seniors
Nikki Lolua and
Layne Hartnell wrapped up their West Liberty women's soccer career on a high note here Sunday, teaming up for the game's only goal in WLU's 1-0 win at Ohio County rival Wheeling.
The season-ending victory completed a season sweep of the county rivalry for Coach
Barry Christmas's Lady Hilltoppers (5-9-4, 5-6-4), who had breezed to a 4-2 win against the Cardinals (0-18-0, 0-14-0) in their initial meeting early last month.
The West Liberty women dominated play throughout the match on Sunday but couldn't remove the goose egg from their side of the scoreboard until the 72nd minute when Lolua finished off an assist from Hartnell to put the Hilltoppers ahead to stay.
It was the second straight game-winning goal for Lolua, who had scored in the opening minute of Wednesday's match at Davis & Elkins to spark the 2-0 victory.
West Liberty outshot Wheeling by an 18-9 margin and had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Olivia Montgomery made 3 saves to post her second straight shutout in goal for West Liberty. It was the sophomore's eighth clean sheet of the season and third in her last four matches.
