FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team weathered a second-half surge by Fairmont State here Sunday to earn a scoreless draw in Mountain East Conference action at Duvall-Rosier Field.
Following an evenly-played opening half, the host Falcons (3-1-1, 2-0-1) turned up the heat during the second 45-minute period but Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (0-4-2, 0-1-1) proved equal to the task.
Fairmont State launched a 14-shot barrage at the WLU net during the second half but couldn't get anything through the Hilltoppers' back line or past West Liberty netminder
Lauren Hartnell despite maintaining enough pressure to force 6 corner kicks.
That sent the match into extra time and it was the Black and Gold that had the better chances during the two 10-minute periods. The Hilltoppers held the Falcons without a shot over the final 20 minutes but came up empty on two shots of their own as the match ended without a score for either side.
Fairmont finished with a 22-12 edge in shots and had 7 corner kicks to just 2 for West Liberty but Hartnell stopped all 8 shots the Falcons put on frame to earn the shutout. Fairmont keeper Isabelle Vaccari was charted with 4 saves.
The West Liberty women return home to host Urbana on Thursday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the West Liberty Soccer Complex with the men's teams from Urbana and WLU set to follow in a 3:30 p.m. match.
