WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's soccer team held No. 15-ranked Notre Dame (Ohio) to a single goal here Sunday but that turned out to be all the visitors needed in a 1-0 win at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
    Coach Thomas Olivier's Hilltoppers (3-8-0, 3-7-0) continued to make a strong impression in their first year as a varsity program, battling the nationally-ranked Falcons (9-2-0, 7-2-0) to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes.
    Notre Dame managed to break the scoring ice early in the second half when Arthur Favero sent in a well-timed cross from the left wing and Guilherme Gloria headed it past WLU keeper Florian Dupuis, putting the visitors on top, 1-0, in the 48th minute.
    That was the only goal Dupuis and the hard-working West Liberty back line surrendered but the Black and Gold was unable to find the equalizer in a match that became more and more physical over the course of the second half.
    Notre Dame was charted with a 17-3 edge in shots but had just a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Dupuis had 5 saves while Falcon keeper Daniele De Angelis stopped both of WLU's shots on goal to earn the shutout.
    The West Liberty men will try to get back in the win column on Wednesday when they travel to Urbana for a 6:30 p.m. match.
