SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team locked up a Mountain East Conference tournament berth here Sunday with a 1-1 draw against Shepherd.
    Coach Barry Christmas's Lady Hilltoppers (4-8-3, 4-5-2) got another clutch late goal from Cate Calissie and held off the Rams (5-7-4, 4-3-4) through both extra time periods to earn the crucial point in the standings.
    After a scoreless first half, it was Shepherd that struck first when Darien Ball scored off an assist from Brogan Pifer in the 61st minute. West Liberty had been outshot by a 6-1 margin to that point in the match but the goal seemed to light a fire under the Hilltoppers.
    The Black and Gold mounted a sustained assault on Shepherd's goal and while the Rams were able to weather the storm for a while, WLU eventually broke through.
    Calissie, a sophomore transfer from Wheeling Jesuit who had scored a game-winning goal at Urbana with just over a minute to play earlier this month, hammered home the equalizer in the 85th minute to send the game into extra time.
    Lauren Hartnell had four saves in goal for West Liberty. Lulu Fricks and Meghan Byers shared time in net for Shepherd with Byers being credited for two saves.
    The West Liberty women play their final home match of the regular season on Wednesday when they host Glenville State at 2 p.m.
