Box Score     FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State's Cassie Whitlatch scored with little more than a minute remaining in the second extra-time period here Friday night as the Falcons handed the West Liberty women's soccer team its first loss of the season.
    Whitlatch's goal was the first score surrendered by Coach Barry Christmas's hard-luck Hilltoppers (1-1-1, 0-1-1) all season, snapping WLU's scoreless streak at 308 minutes and 54 seconds and giving the Falcons (2-0-1, 1-0-1) their second win in three games.
    The game-winner came out of what appeared to be a harmless scramble on the left wing. Whitlatch found herself with space when the ball popped free and quickly lofted a high arcing shot toward the West Liberty net from 25 yards out.
    Hilltopper netminder Lauren Hartnell leaped high but the ball squeezed just between her fingertips and the bottom of the crossbar in the 109th minute, touching off a wild celebration by the hosts.
    It was a surprising end to what had been a defensive struggle throughout. Fairmont State keeper Shawna Graham made 5 saves on 10 shots by WLU. Graham's shot was the Falcons' 11th of the night. Hartnell was credited with 4 saves.
    The Hilltoppers return home to host Ohio County rival Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
