Michelle Bourkab saw a potential game-winning shot slam off the post with less than 4 minutes remaining in extra time here Tuesday and the WLU women's soccer team settled for a scoreless draw in their Mountain East Conference opener at Shepherd.
Coach
Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (1-0-1, 0-0-1) had to weather an early storm as the homestanding Rams (0-1-1, 0-0-1) outshot the Black and Gold by a 9-2 margin in the first half but senior goalkeeper
Allie Warsaw was up to the task.
Warsaw turned aside the five shots that Shepherd managed to put on frame during the early burst and went on to post her second clean sheet in as many games with 9 total saves.
West Liberty turned the tables with an 8-1 shot advantage in the second half of regulation but the Hilltoppers couldn't get one past Ram keeper Christi LaBelle, who made 3 saves during the second half to keep the visitors off the board and send the game into extra time.
The Black and Gold had the best scoring opportunity of the match when Bourkab got a shot past LaBelle in the 116
th minute only to see it bounce away off the post and the match went into the books as a scoreless draw.
The West Liberty women will be back in action on Friday night when they travel to Fairmont State for a 7 p.m. match at Duvall-Rosier Field.
