SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Unbeaten Notre Dame scored two goals in the final five minutes of regulation here Sunday to escape with a 3-1 victory against West Liberty in a Mountain East Conference women's soccer match at Mueller Field.
The Falcons (7-0-0, 7-0-0) grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a Norah Barnes goal in the 10th minute and maintained that advantage through an evenly-played opening half.
Coach
Barry Christmas's visiting Hilltoppers (2-5-1, 1-5-1) kept the pressure on throughout the second half and were finally rewarded when senior
Thanna Oddo collected a loose ball near the penalty spot and rifled it into the net in the 86th minute.
West Liberty's celebration proved short-lived, however, as Falcon standout Alexis Manoa got the lead back for the hosts on a blurry fast counterattack.
Manoa took a pass from Katarina Doncevic and sent it home barely a minute after Oddo's equalizer for a 2-1 Notre Dame advantage. The hosts added an insurance tally from Jackie Corrigan in the 89th minute to conclude the scoring.
The Hilltoppers were outshot by a 13-6 margin but senior keeper
Allie Warsaw came up with seven saves to keep the Black and Gold in the hunt until the end. Kyra McDowell had 3 saves to pick up the win in net for the Falcons.
The West Liberty women return home to host Urbana on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
