Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team got its season off to a flying start Thursday afternoon with a 1-0 shutout of California (Pa.) in a mutual lid-lifter at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
Although Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers dominated the run of play from the opening kick, the Vulcans were able to weather the storm until the final 10 minutes of the opening half.
It was senior standout
Thanna Oddo who broke the scoring ice in the 36th minute with the help of junior forward
Layne Hartnell.
The speedy Hartnell threaded a pretty ball into the box on the left side and Oddo powered it into the left corner of the net off California keeper Michaela Colon for what turned out to be the sixth game-winner of her career.
Neither team scored the rest of the way, although WLU outshot the Vulcans by a 14-6 margin on the day.
California only managed to get two shots on frame during the contest and Hilltopper netminder
Allie Warsaw turned both aside to earn the shutout. Colon was credited with 4 saves for the visitors.
West Liberty kicks off Mountain East Conference play on Tuesday with a 2:30 p.m. match at Shepherd.
