WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team completed a season sweep of Ohio County rival Wheeling Jesuit here Friday with a 1-0 shutout at Bishop Schmitt Field.
The Hartnell sisters took center stage for Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (4-5-2, 3-5-2).
Layne Hartnell scored the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute and
Lauren Hartnell made it stand up with 6 saves in goal, shutting out the Cardinals (3-8-0, 2-7-0) for her third consecutive clean sheet.
The Black and Gold had rolled to a 3-0 blowout in last month's initial meeting on the hilltop but the teams battled on fairly even terms through a scoreless opening half on Friday before West Liberty turned up the heat.
The winning goal developed out of a WLU counter-attack off a Cardinal flurry early in the second half.
Layne Hartnell got a shot on net that Wheeling Jesuit keeper Hannah Thompson was able to deflect over the end line for a save and a West Liberty corner kick.
Layne Hartnell took the corner and got the ball right back from Caitlin de Vries before powering it past Thompson for what proved to be the game's only goal.
The Hilltoppers controlled the run of play for most of the second half with 6 of Thompson's 7 saves coming after intermission.
Lauren Hartnell came up with her biggest save in the 83rd minute with a diving stop of a drive by Wheeling Jesuit's Kendra Benzel. Allyson Evans ran onto the rebound for the hosts but her follow shot rolled harmlessly past the left post.
The West Liberty women return home on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match against Fairmont State.
