WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to regionally-ranked Notre Dame Saturday afternoon at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (4-11-2, 3-11-2) held the high-powered Falcons (12-3-2, 12-2-2) to just seven shots for the entire match but the visitors – No. 5 in this week's NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings – made an early goal stand up for their third straight shutout win.
Notre Dame didn't get off a shot until 15 minutes into the match but that shot turned out to be the only goal of the day.
The Falcons' Brooke LeForce split a pair of defenders to get inside the six and drove the ball past Hilltopper keeper Alllie Warsaw for a 1-0 lead.
West Liberty kept Notre Dame off the board the rest of the way but was never able to come up with the equalizer.
The Falcons dropped back into a defensive shell which combined with the cold and rainy conditions to make it difficult for WLU to sustain an offensive surge.
The Hilltoppers were able to create some chances but Notre Dame keeper Kyra McDowell proved up to the task, making 3 saves to earn the shutout. Warsaw also had 3 saves for the hosts.
It was the last career match for WLU seniors Warsaw,
Thanna Oddo and
Megan Hellmuth, who were honored prior to the game in Senior Day ceremonies.
