URBANA, Ohio – Urbana found the net twice midway through the first half here Wednesday afternoon and went on to claim a 2-0 victory against West Liberty in Mountain East Conference women's soccer action at Urbana University Stadium.
It was a frustrating setback for Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (4-10-2, 3-10-2) as they battled the Blue Knights (3-10-3, 3-9-2) to a virtual draw everywhere but on the scoreboard.
West Liberty launched 12 shots on the afternoon to 13 for Urbana. WLU netminder
Lauren Hartnell was charted with 4 saves while Urbana's Katherine Beech had to make 5 saves to earn the shutout. The hosts claimed a narrow, 5-4, edge in corners.
It was a corner kick that enabled the Blue Knights to break the scoring ice in the 22nd minute as Bronte Flannery sent in a corner just outside the six that Savannah Morgan drove past Hartnell for a 1-0 Urbana lead.
The backbreaker came just five minutes later when the hosts' Alyssa Edwards split a pair of Black and Gold defenders and scored from 10 yards out to provide the Blue Knights with what proved to be an insurmountable two-goal lead.
The Hilltoppers close out the season at home on Saturday with a 1 p.m. kickoff against regionally-ranked Notre Dame (Ohio).
