WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Concord scored on a set piece with little more than a minute remaining in the second extra time period here Saturday to break up a scoreless tie and hand West Liberty a 1-0 loss in Mountain East Conference women's soccer action at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
After neither squad could dent the scoreboard through 90 minutes of regulation and the first 10-minute extra time period, the clock was rapidly running down in the second extra time frame when the visitors finally broke through.
Bane had a shot blocked over the end line as the clock ticked under 2 minutes, giving Concord its eighth corner kick of the day.
Courtney Wallace delivered a well-struck ball into the box and a leaping Bane headed it into the net for the game-winner in the 109
th minute.
It was a frustrating conclusion for Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (4-8-2, 3-8-2), who weathered a constant barrage from the up-tempo Mountain Lions (8-6-0, 6-6-0) throughout the afternoon only to come away empty-handed.
Concord launched 26 shots at the West Liberty cage but the WLU defense and junior keeper
Lauren Hartnell kept the hosts in the contest until the end. Hartnell was charted with 10 saves and the Hilltopper defense blocked four other shots in a gritty performance.
West Liberty had 12 shots with Concord keeper Katie Maher making five saves to earn the shutout.
The Lady Hilltoppers will be idle this week before returning to the West Liberty Soccer Complex pitch on Oct. 21 with a 1 p.m. match against Charleston.
