Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team battled unbeaten and No. 11-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan to the wire here Wednesday only to see the Bobcats escape with a 1-0 decision at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
Coach Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (4-7-2, 3-7-2) controlled the run of play for long stretches during the match but it was the nationally-ranked Bobcats (13-0-1, 12-0-0) who broke the scoring ice midway through the first half.
Amy Stewart collected a ball inside the box and slipped it past WLU keeper Lauren Hartnell in the 25th minute. Audrey Barner and Jennafer Alonge were credited with assists.
West Virginia Wesleyan, which has surrendered only one goal in its last 12 matches, spent the rest of the afternoon frustrating a strong offensive effort from the Black and Gold.
West Liberty had a 13-6 edge in shots taken - including a 7-1 advantage in the second half - but was unable to get a ball past the Bobcats' goalkeeping duo of Chelsea Hubner and Ashlee Schumacher, who posted the visitors' 11th shutout of the season.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action on Saturday when they host Concord in a noon match at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
