WLU Wrestlers Fall to NCAA Division I Foes

CLARION, Pa. – The West Liberty University wrestling team continued to challenge itself here Sunday afternoon as Coach Mitch Smith's youthful Hilltoppers dropped a pair of dual matches to NCAA Division I squads in a triangular meet at Tippin Gym on the campus of Clarion University.
The Black and Gold closed out the afternoon with a 39-3 loss to the host Golden Eagles after opening the triangular with a 44-0 setback against Hofstra (N.Y.). Hofstra rolled to a 28-5 win against Clarion in the other match.
Bryce Humphreys picked up the lone win for West Liberty on the day when he muscled out a 6-2 win against the Golden Eagles' Roshaun Cooley to forge a 3-3 tie in the early going of the final match.
Clarion picked up a forfeit at 141 and then pulled out a pair of narrow decisions to take control of the match.
The Hilltoppers' Josh Cornell came up just short in a 6-4 loss to Jake Keller in their 149-pound match. The Golden Eagles' Taylor Cahill followed up with a hard-fought 5-2 win against WLU's DeMadre Turner at 157 and the hosts were on their way.
West Liberty will be back in action at home on Saturday when West Liberty hosts the annual West Virginia Invitational. Opening round matches are set for a 11 a.m. start at the ASRC.
