WLU Women's Soccer Blanked in Opener

Box Score PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – The West Liberty University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Ursuline Thursday afternoon in a mutual season opener on the Arrows' home pitch.
Coach Barry Christmas' youthful Hilltoppers faced an uphill climb against a veteran Ursuline squad which was picked to finish second in its G-MAC but a strong defensive effort kept the Black and Gold in the hunt to the final whistle.
The Arrows kept the action in West Liberty's end of the field for much of the afternoon but had a difficult time finishing their scoring opportunities with sophomore keeper Lauren Hartnell playing well behind a well-organized Hilltopper defense.
Ursuline finally broke the scoring ice in the 54th minute when Cassie Cripe drove home an assist from Aline Czaplicki.
The Arrows continued to force the attack, finishing with a 22-4 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, but couldn't find the back of the WLU net again.
In fact, West Liberty nearly came up with a late equalizer when junior striker Thanna Oddo put a shot on net in the 88th minute but veteran Ursuline netminder Helen Jazzar made the save to preserve the 13th shutout of her career.
Hartnell was charted with 11 saves for the Hilltoppers.
The West Liberty women face another tough non-conference road test on Tuesday when they travel to Ashland for a 6 p.m. match.
