West Liberty Tennis Holds Off Lakers

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's team survived a strong challenge from upset-minded Mercyhurst Thursday afternoon to take a 5-4 decision at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers (14-5) grabbed an early advantage by taking two of the three doubles matches and posted three straight-set wins in singles play to hold off the visiting Lakers (9-6).
Santiago Gutierrez, Andy Ponder and Martin Moncayo came through with the singles wins for the Black and Gold.
Gutierrez and Baptiste Perrin combined for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles with Ponder and Matt Tully taking an 8-5 nod for the hosts at No. 2 doubles.
The West Liberty men host Davis & Elkins on Monday in their final tuneup for next weekend's Mountain East Conference championship tournament in Charleston.
