Late Goals Foil Lady Hilltoppers' Upset Bid

Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – An upset bid by the West Liberty University women's soccer team fell just short here Wednesday night as regionally-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan banged home two late goals to pull out a 2-0 victory at chilly Culpepper Stadium.
Coach Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (6-7-4, 6-5-4) had battled the Bobcats (12-2-3, 11-2-3) to a scoreless draw in their earlier meeting and seemed well on their way to another positive result on Wednesday after neither team was able to find the net in the opening 45 minutes.
West Liberty continued to fend off a series of Wesleyan forays throughout the second half only to see the Bobcats - listed at No. 7 in this week's Atlantic Region rankings - take advantage of one of their several set pieces to break the scoring ice.
Marissa Zetty fed a direct kick into the box to Haelly Ramirez, who wiped the zero off the scoreboard in the 78th minute. Audrey Barber chipped in an insurance goal in the 86th minutes to complete the scoring.
Wesleyan outshot the Hilltoppers by a 21-5 margin and had a 10-0 edge in corner kicks but a stalwart effort from the WLU back line and Lauren Hartnell's 8 saves kept the visitors in the match until the waning minutes.
West Liberty will try to clinch its first-ever Mountain East Conference tournament berth on Saturday when the Hilltoppers close out their regular season with a 1 p.m. match at Concord.
