West Liberty Soccer Edged at Wheeling Jesuit

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team surrendered a goal near the end of the first half Thursday night and it turned out to be the only score of the game as host Wheeling Jesuit held on for a 1-0 victory in Mountain East Conference action.
Coach Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (6-6-3, 6-4-3) controlled the run of play for long stretches in the opening half but couldn't finalize any of their scoring chances.
The Cardinals (5-9-1, 4-8-1) created the game's only goal in the 39th minute when Sydney Lavengood controlled the ball in the box and slid it across to Jenny Soegaard, who guided it home from nearly point-blank range.
West Liberty nearly came up with the equalizer in the 55th minute when Emily Evans found Thanna Oddo with a corner kick. Oddo beat WJU netminder Hannah Thompson only to see the shot slam into the goal post and bounce harmlessly away.
Thompson finished with 3 saves to record the shutout for Wheeling Jesuit while Hilltopper keeper Lauren Hartnell had one save.
West Liberty hits the road again on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match at Fairmont State.
