Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Visiting Ashland broke up a scoreless tie with a trio of second-half goals and held on for a 3-1 win against West Liberty Friday afternoon in a mutual women's soccer opener at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
The teams battled on even terms through a scoreless first half but the Eagles were able to bring their firepower to bear when play resumed.
Highly-touted freshman Deijah Swihart, a high school All-American and a four-time All-Ohio selection at Clear Fork High School, notched the first goal of her collegiate career in the 50th minute when she finished off a scramble in front of Hilltopper netminder Allie Warsaw. Morgan Bittengle, who led the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in scoring a year ago, made it 2-0 off an assist from Lauren Gokey in the 70th minute and Swihart ripped in her second goal of the afternoon in the 85th minute.
Courtney Barker turned aside five Hilltopper shots to earn the win in goal for Ashland. Warsaw was charted with five saves for the Hilltoppers.
West Liberty will be idle until next Friday when the Hilltoppers open Mountain East Conference play with a 5 p.m. home match against the University of Charleston.
