Frustrating Setback for Lady Hilltoppers

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team couldn't get the ball past the crossbar here Friday afternoon and Charleston escaped with a 1-0 win in Mountain East Conference action at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.

The Golden Eagles (3-0-1, 2-0-0) scored the game's only goal in the 53rd minute when Hannah Myers came free on the left side and finished off an assist from Erica Lemmert.

Coach Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (0-2-0, 0-1-0) had just missed taking the lead in the first half when Janice Johnson banged a shot off the crossbar in the 19th minute. Keiana Palmer tried to guide the rebound home but her shot was smothered by UC keeper Zoe Zyta.

West Liberty's Sarah Evans also hit the crossbar in the 31st minute but the half still ended with the teams locked in a scoreless tie.

The frustration continued to mount for the hosts over the final 45 minutes. Thanna Oddo hit the crossbar in the 78th minute and Zyta came up with a big save on Briella Taylor in the 89th minute to preserve the win.

The Hilltoppers outshot the Golden Eagles by a slim 13-12 margin while UC had a 6-4 edge in corners.

Zyta was charted with 5 saves to earn the shutout. Allie Warsaw had 4 saves in net for WLU.

The Hilltoppers hit the road on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match at Urbana.
