Box Score
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team dominated play for much of the afternoon here Tuesday only to see a fluke own goal in the second half hand visting Shepherd a 1-0 win.
Coach Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (2-5-3, 2-4-3) maintained steady pressure on the Rams' (5-4-2, 4-3-2) net throughout the match, posting a 15-9 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Unfortunately, the Black and Gold couldn't get anything past Shepherd goalkeeper Kelsey Rhoderick, who finished with 7 saves to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
West Liberty keeper Allie Warsaw, the reigning MEC Player of the Week, stopped the only three shots the Rams put on net but still walked off the pitch on the short end of the scoreboard.
The game's only goal stemmed from a corner kick off the foot of Shepherd's Kelsey Fletcher in the 66th minute. As players from both teams battled for position in front of the cage, the ball caromed off a WLU defender into the net for a 1-0 Ram lead.
The Hilltoppers redoubled their assault on the Shepherd goal in search of the equalizer but Rhoderick proved up to the challenge, coming up with four of her seven saves in the last 10 minutes to preserve the win.
West Liberty hits the road on Friday for a 4 p.m. match with Notre Dame (Ohio) in South Euclid, Ohio.
