Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team came up with a huge defensive effort here Saturday night and battled No. 13-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan to a scoreless draw on the Bobcats' home pitch.
Coach Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (2-4-3, 2-3-3) continue their climb up the Mountain East Conference standings with two wins and three ties in their last six games. League-leading Wesleyan (9-0-1, 7-0-1) suffered the first blemish on its unbeaten season record. West Liberty weathered an early storm as the host Bobcats came out of the blocks with all guns blazing.
Wesleyan's Kristi Dalton hit the crossbar in the 16th minute but the best scoring chance for either team was yet to come.
In the 22nd minute, the Bobcats' Samantha Lackner sent in a well-struck corner kick that found Colette Biondi in the box. Biondi saw an opening but her quick shot hit the crossbar. She tried to finish off the rebound but WLU keeper Allie Warsaw was there for the save, turning the hosts away empty-handed. The Hilltoppers had several scoring chances of their own but couldn't solve Wesleyan keeper Hillary DeWitt, who denied Sarah Evans in the 87th minute to preserve the tie and force extra time. Warsaw came up with two more saves in overtime to wrap things up. The Bobcats finished with a 19-8 edge in shots but only eight of them were on target and Warsaw handled every one of them to earn the shutout. Seven of West Liberty's eight shots were on frame but DeWitt was equal to that task, as well.
The Hilltoppers return home to host Shepherd on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
