West Liberty Women Come Up Short in Buckhannon

Box Score
BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team's run at a post-season berth came up one win short here Sunday afternoon as regionally-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan held on for a 2-0 victory in the final Mountain East Conference game of the regular season.
It was a bitter pill to swallow for Coach Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (6-7-3, 6-6-2), who came into the game needing a win to earn the fourth and final spot in this week's MEC Tournament field.
The host Bobcats (11-3-2, 9-3-2), No. 9 in last week's Atlantic Region rankings, put the visitors in an early hole when West Liberty failed to clean up a cross from Shaelyn McNamara and Colette Biondi drove it into the top right corner of the net in the game's opening minute.
Wesleyan went up 2-0 in the 12th minute when Keena Moreta finished off a cross from Biondi, leaving the Hilltoppers with too steep a hill to climb. After the second goal, the Bobcats retreated into a defensive shell. They attempted only four more shots in the final 78-plus minutes and focused on short-circuiting any WLU attack.
Each team finished with 6 shots in what became a defensive struggle. West Liberty keeper Allie Warsaw and Wesleyan netminder Lauren Duncan were each credited with 3 saves.
