Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University women's soccer team battled Mountain East Conference-leading Notre Dame (Ohio) to the wire here Tuesday before coming out on the short end of a 1-0 score at a cold and rainy West Liberty Soccer Complex.
Coach Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (4-6-3, 4-5-2) had to weather a first-half storm from the high-powered Falcons (10-1-2, 9-1-2), who kept play in West Liberty's end for most of the opening 45 minutes. Notre Dame had an 8-0 advantage in shots during the first half but a strong performance by the Hilltopper back line and keeper Allie Warsaw kept the game scoreless at intermission. The second half was played on much more equal footing with the Falcons posting a narrow 5-4 edge in shots. Unfortunately for the hosts, Notre Dame's fifth and last shot proved to be the tiebreaker as Lacey Marcoux took a cross from Alex DeFilippo in the 71st minute and guided it under a diving Warsaw for the only goal of the match.
West Liberty had two more scoring chances in the final 20 minutes but couldn't get the ball past Notre Dame keeper Samantha Shoemaker.
The Hilltoppers return to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match at Ohio County rival Wheeling Jesuit.
