SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Shepherd's Taylor Amsley broke up a scoreless tie with an overtime goal to hand West Liberty a 1-0 loss in Mountain East Conference women's soccer action hereTuesday afternoon.
Amsley redirected a pass from Kelsey Smith past diving Hilltopper netminder Rachel Coles in the 94th minute to end West Liberty's post-season hopes while keeping the Rams in contention for an MEC playoff berth.
The overtime victory pulled Shepherd (7-8-3, 4-7-3) into a tie with idle Wheeling Jesuit (5-9-3, 4-6-3) for the fourth and final MEC playoff spot. Jesuit closes out its MEC slate on Wednesdayagainst West Virginia Wesleyan.
Coach Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (5-11-1, 4-9-1), who would have nudged one point ahead of the Cardinals with a win in just their second varsity season, slipped back into the MEC pack.
Shepherd outshot West Liberty by a 24-9 margin but 9 saves by Coles and a strong effort from the WLU back line kept the visitors in the game throughout.
The Hilltoppers wrap up the regular season at home on Friday with a 1 p.m. non-conference match against St. Catherine's (Ont.).
