SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The West Liberty University women's soccer team held league-leading Notre Dame to a single goal here Wednesday but Falcon netminder Kristy Kolschetsky came up big in the second half to keep the Hilltoppers off the board and preserve a 1-0 victory for the hosts.
Notre Dame (13-1-0, 11-1-0) scored the game's only goal late in the first half when Katherine Beattie rifled a low shot past diving West Liberty (4-10-1, 3-8-1) keeper Hannah Judkins from just inside the box in the 33rd minute.
A sterling defensive effort by the Hilltopper back line, which blocked several Falcon shots before they got to the net, combined with four saves by Judkins to hold the hosts scoreless the rest of the way.
After failing to get a shot on net in the first half, West Liberty kept Kolschetsky on her toes at several junctures in the second half. The Notre Dame keeper made all three of her saves in the second half – including a game-saver off the Hilltoppers' Keiana Palmer in the final minute – to foil the visitors' upset bid and earn the shutout.
West Liberty returns to action on Saturday with a noon match at Ohio County rival Wheeling Jesuit.
