WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Charleston exploded for five first-half goals en route to a 6-0 victory against West Liberty on Sunday in Mountain East Conference women's soccer action at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
Coach Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (4-9-1, 3-7-1) never got anything going as the Golden Eagles (7-6-1, 5-5-1) needed less than 10 minutes to put the first goal on the board, added another midway through the opening half and put the game out of reach with a three-goal barrage in the final 10 minutes of the period.
Charleston had a 20-7 advantage in shots but West Liberty keeper Hannah Judkins came up with 10 saves to keep the match from getting even more out of hand. Jennifer Poppe stopped four WLU shots to earn the shutout for UC.
Still alive in the MEC playoff chase, the Hilltoppers will try to bounce back on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. match against league-leading Notre Dame in South Euclid, Ohio.
