Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
Courtney Webb banged home a 25-yard laser late in the second overtime period Wednesday afternoon to lift the West Liberty University women's soccer team to a 1-0 upset of Mountain East Conference power West Virginia Wesleyan at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
The victory avenged a 2-0 WLU loss to Wesleyan in Buckhannon last month.
Wednesday's verdict was the most impressive win of the season for Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (3-7-1, 2-5-1), who combined a sterling defensive effort with Webb's game-winner to snap a four-game winning streak for the Bobcats (6-4-1, 5-2-1).
Currently second in the MEC standings, Wesleyan controlled the run of play for most of the afternoon. The Bobcats outshot West Liberty by a 19-8 margin and forced 6 corner kicks compared to none for the hosts but couldn't find the net against the Hilltoppers' back line.
Wesleyan came close on a couple of occasions, banging a shot off the crossbar late in regulation and hitting the crossbar again in the waning minutes of the first extra period but that was as close as the Bobcats would come.
Rachel Coles went the distance in net and made 7 saves to earn the shutout for West Liberty.
The Hilltoppers return to action Sunday afternoon when they head west to take on Urbana (Ohio) in a 2 p.m. match.
