Box Score     CHARLESTON, W.Va.  – The University of Charleston women's soccer team knocked in a pair of second-half goals to spoil a scrappy effort by West Liberty Saturday afternoon as the Hilltoppers came away on the short end of a 2-0 tally.
The teams had battled to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes but the host Golden Eagles (3-5, 3-1) used a bit of good fortune to break the scoring ice 10 minutes into the second half.
A shot by UC's Elyse Surbaugh sailed high over West Liberty (2-5, 1-3) keeper Rachel Coles but slammed into the crossbar and caromed right to the Golden Eagles' Brittany Akers, who nodded it home for a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute.
Akers teamed with Surbaugh for an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. Akers sent in a well-paced cross from the left wing that found Surbaugh sprinting across the crease. Without breaking stride, Surbaugh headed it past Coles to conclude the scoring.
Coles had a busy day in net as Charleston launched a total of 27 shots with 18 of them on frame. Coles was credited with 15 saves while Hannah Judkins picked up a save in relief after entering the game in the 79th minute.
Courtney Budd stopped all 6 Hilltopper shots on goal to earn the shutout in net for UC
The women's soccer team heads to Western Pennsylvania on Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. match against Pitt-Johnstown.
