PHILIPPI, W.Va. – West Virginia Conference regular-season champion Alderson-Broaddus needed a strong second half effort to pull out a 3-1 victory against upset-minded West Liberty in women's soccer action here Tuesday night.
Coach
Barry Christmas's first-year Hilltoppers (2-14-0, 1-9-0) kept the high-powered Battlers (12-4-1, 9-1-0) at bay through the first 45 minutes and entered the second half locked in a scoreless tie.
Alderson-Broaddus broke the scoring ice quickly when play resumed with Olivia Augustine finishing off an assist from Taylor Bryant in the first minute of the second half.
That one-goal margin stood until the 75th minute when A-B's Nicole Lehman scored off an assist from Valerie Barlow for a 2-0 lead.
West Liberty made things interesting when
Nancy Isner's goal off an
Alyssa Culp feed trimmed the margin to 2-1 in the 87th minute but Amber King added an insurance tally for the Battlers less than a minute later to conclude the scoring.
The Hilltoppers close out their first intercollegiate varsity season on Saturday with a 10 a.m. game at Bluefield State.
