ATHENS, W.Va.  – An upset bid by West Liberty University's first-year women's soccer program came up just short here on Tuesday afternoon as Concord broke up a scoreless tie in overtime to escape with a 1-0 victory.
Coach Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (2-12, 1-7) used a strong defensive effort backed by stellar play in net from keeper Rachel Coles to hold the host Mountain Lions (7-6-2, 4-4-1) at bay throughout the first 90 minutes but couldn't come up with the game-winning goal.
West Liberty's Sarah Evans hit the post with a drive early in the second half but that was the closest either team came to scoring until the extra period.
Concord carried much of the run of play in overtime but Coles came up with two more saves to keep the hosts off the board until Kari Simon finished off an assist from Erika Hoff in the 99th minute for the game-winner.
The Mountain Lions held a 15-6 advantage in shots but Coles turned aside 7 of the 8 shots that were on frame. In addition to Evans' shot off the post, another Hilltopper shot was blocked by a defender and none of the other four were on frame.
West Liberty returns to action on Friday with a 4 p.m. match at West Virginia Wesleyan.
