William McCreary was a two-way standout who helped lead Coach Joe Bartell's legendary football powerhouse squads to a combined 34-1-3 record from 1947-50. McCreary came to the hilltop in 1946 after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and immediately earned starting spots at offensive guard and defensive end.
Although he shifted to offensive end prior to his junior season, McCreary remained a two-way starter throughout the Hilltoppers' dynamic run. West Liberty was 7-2 during his freshman year before going 8-0-2 with four shutouts in 1947. The 1948 squad won its first eight games before falling to Morris Harvey in the season finale to finish the season at 8-1.
That was the last loss McCreary would suffer in a Hilltopper uniform. The 1949 team opened with a tie against West Virginia Tech and then reeled off nine straight wins, capped by a 20-0 victory over Western Carolina in the Smokey Mountain Bowl. McCreary's 1950 team was even more dominant, capping a perfect 9-0-0 season with a 28-26 win against Appalachian State in the Pythian Bowl.
McCreary’s success didn’t end on the playing field. At the time of his induction, he was Chairman of the Board of CRM Inc. and had been instrumental in founding several companies that dramatically impacted the real estate business in California.
