A dominant left-handed pitcher for Coach Jim Watson's powerhouse West Liberty baseball program of the early 1970s, Steve Wojcik helped lead the Hilltoppers to back-to-back WVIAC titles before embarking on a professional baseball career.
The Wheeling native went 23-4 on the mound in his three seasons on the hilltop, earning All-WVIAC honors all three years and being named WVIAC Pitcher of the Year as a senior in 1974. Wojcik posted a league-best 0.85 ERA in WVIAC play that season and his 1.00 overall ERA ranked among the Top 10 nationally, earning him honorable mention NAIA All-America honors.
Wojcik spent the next four years pitching in the New York Mets organization, rising as high as the Class AAA level before an arm injury prematurely ended his career. He returned to the Ohio Valley as a teacher and coach at Bridgeport (Ohio) High School from 1980-96. Wojcik also coached at Wheeling Park High School and served for several seasons as a pitching coach with the Hilltoppers.
