    A gifted multi-sport athlete, Phil Comer was a six-time All-WVIAC selection in football and baseball during the late 1960s before embarking on a successful coaching and teaching career. The Wheeling, W.Va. native was an All-WVIAC selection at quarterback for the Hilltopper football team as a freshman, sophomore and junior before being sidelined by injuries in his senior season.
    The versatile athlete also was a four-year starter and 3-time All-WVIAC honoree on the West Liberty baseball team as a pitcher/outfielder. He was 10-2 on the mound with a 2.16 ERA for his career – topped by an 0.56 mark as a senior – and compiled a .318 career batting average
    Comer graduated from West Liberty in 1969 with a degree in Elementary Education and holds a master’s degree in Safety Management and Sports Management from West Virginia University. He served in the military from 1970-72 as a sergeant (E-5) and training instructor at Fort Knox, Ky. before returning home to embark on a lengthy teaching and coaching career with Ohio County Schools.
