A four-year regular for Coach Joe Bartell on the WLSC gridiron, Kelchak played on Bartell's first WVIAC championship squad in 1936 and helped lead the Hilltoppers to a 22-11-2 record during his four varsity seasons. Kelchak was also a four-year letterman in basketball and played two seasons of baseball before graduating in 1939.
He entered the working world as a high school teacher and coach at Weir (W.Va.) High School and Bridgeport (Ohio) High School before embarking on a long and successful military career. Kelchak retired from the United States Army in 1967 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
