Myles Witchey helped lead the West Liberty men's basketball team to its first NAIA national tournament berth as a sophomore and was one of the leading scorers in the nation as a senior to highlight a stellar three-year career (1952-54).
A rangy center with a deadly hook shot, Witchey was a double-figure scorer on the Hilltoppers' 1952 squad that set a school record with 22 wins and made its NAIA national tournament debut in Kansas City. The All-WVIAC standout followed that up with solid junior campaign but is best remembered for an outstanding senior season that saw him average just over 26 points a game to rank among the Top 20 scorers in the nation.
Named to the WVIAC's All-Time Men's Basketball Team selected in 1962, Witchey earned a tryout for the 1956 U.S. Olympic team after joining the U.S. Army following graduation. Witchey was a successful high school basketball coach in Ohio before returning to the collegiate ranks as head man at California (Pa.) University. He was inducted into the California (Pa.) Hall of Fame in 2002.
