One of the best female athletes ever to wear the Black and Gold, Melissa Hammond was a four-time All-West Virginia Conference selection in softball and women's basketball from 1990-93.
The Shadyside, Ohio native was one of the leading hitters in the WVIAC all four years with the Hilltopper softball team. In addition to her All-WVIAC laurels, Hammond also was voted onto the WVIAC's All-Tournament Team on three occasions.
It was the basketball court where Hammond truly shined. The sweet-shooting southpaw ranked among the leading scorers in WVIAC history with a then-school record 2,150 career points. When she put away her jersey for the final time, Hammond held more than 20 school records with the women's basketball program.
Just as successful in the classroom, Hammond was a 3-time WVIAC Scholar-Athlete Award winner and received a prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship after graduating magna cum laude.
